What Is Sustainable Fashion?
Sustainable fashion, also called eco fashion, is a part of the growing design philosophy and trend of sustainability, the goal of which is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of human impact on the environment and social responsibility. It can be seen as an alternative trend against fast fashion.
- No child labour
- Low carbon footprint
- Locally sourced raw materials
- Utilises recycled textiles
- Waste management of reduce, reuse, recycle in a closed loop system
- Supports local business and fair trade
- Goes against the trend of fast fashion and consumerism
Why The T-Shirt
With the fashion industry being the second largest polluting industry on the planet, we started with the t-shirt because we believe that the best way to change an industry is to start with the single largest polluting garment in the world. Australians are also one of the worst countries for textile reuse and recycling with the Australian Bureau of statistics stating 2009-10. 501,000 tonnes (or 88%) of leather and textiles were sent to landfill.
Farm To Hanger Packaging
Our minimalist packaging keeps everything classy and simple with recycled eco-friendly packaging and promotional materials. . Not one piece of plastic is used in our packaging. (Except for the sending satchel!) We use recycled card stocks, papers and stickers, even our Luxe gift boxes are 100% recycled!
Our factory is and filled with recycled machines that would have otherwise gone to the tip. They were built at a time where people valued well built, well engineered machines, so we fix them, love them up and keep them going for as long as possible.
Everyone that works at Farm To Hanger are paid fair wages under Australian employment standards. Our ECA certification also ensures that our work environment and conditions are transparent.
All our textile waste is now split into three sections, reusable, repurposed and recycled. We reuse scraps to make dog toys for a local charity, we repurpose selvage seams for tethering plants to stakes and the recycling goes to Maureen in Melbourne, VIC. However, in the last 6 months we haven't needed to send anything to recycling and continue to work with our waste textiles to produce new products!
Planting A Tree For Every Single Item We Make
We are going another step further in our quest for a sustainable future, we are planting one tree for every garment we sell. We have partnered with Greenfleet through their biodiverse carbon offset program to plant a tree for every product we make. We love the earth so we are going to get our hands dirty this year and attend planting events. Sometime actions speak louder than words.
When you shop Farm to Hanger, you’re not only getting quality clothing that reduces environmental impact and waste, you’re getting a traceable, transparent supply chain that supports local farmers, businesses and families.
Repair or Recycle
We are embarking on a repair or recycle initiative to increase the life span of our garments and responsibly reduce textile waste. If you have any of our garments and would like to repair or recycle them, please get in contact with us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Even if you don't buy anything from Farm To Hanger, please consider everything you do and how it affects the planet.
